This tournament, that organizers have said will become an annual event, drew more anglers than any other known crappie tournament here since the lake was impounded in 1969. The tournament featured hourly weigh-ins paying the top three anglers for the largest crappie brought in each hour. These hourly weigh-ins paying $100 for 1st place were won by Wilda Brown (9AM - 1.36 lb), Phillip Sims (10AM - 2.12 lb), Ronnie McKenzie (11AM - 1.83 lb), Kent Wiggins (12PM - 1.64 lb), Sandra Hutchinson (1PM - 1.69 lb), and Jeff Smedley (2pm - 1.75 lb). Thomasville, Alabama's Tracy Jackson fired up the crowd that had gathered for the final weigh-in when she brought in a big crappie just before 3pm. Emcee and weighmaster, James "Big Daddy" Lawler, quickly weighed the fish and announced that Jackson's 2.30 pound fish was the new leader. Her fish, worth $1000 when the three o'clock hour arrived, overtook Camden's Phillip Sims's 2.12 pound fish that led since 10am. Ronnie McKenzie of Pennington placed 3rd with a 1.83 pound crappie. Sims took home $500 and McKenzie $250. A total of $2800 was awarded to the hourly and overall winners. Five $100 tagged crappie were caught on Saturday, including two by angler Dennis Willett, a tournament competitor. One of these fish garnered Willett another $50 with a second place finish in one of the hourly weigh-ins. With only 185 tagged fish scattered across 25 miles of river and its coves, Willett's accomplishment in beating incredible odds continues to amaze the area fishermen. Heath and Jessica Crocker, of Thomaston, fishing from the same boat each pulled a tagged crappie from the same treetop to earn the couple a $100 bill each. Paul Helton of Silver Hill caught the fifth $100 tag fish on Saturday. Wilcox Area Chamber of Commerce President William Malone thanked the fishermen, many whom live outside the county, for spending their leisure time and dollars in the county. He also thanked the many sponsors that made the tournament and derby possible. Malone said, "We have already seen these efforts pay big dividends in area tourism. The enthusiasm of area businesses and fishermen has been incredible." Though the tournament itself is now in the record books, the 30-day Derby continues until May 18th. On Sunday, two more $100 fish were caught. Karen Smith of Ellisville, Mississippi caught a tagged crappie fishing from a dock at Paradise Point in Gees Bend Sunday morning. Lisa Hutcherson, of Thomasville, caught the seventh $100 fish Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on sale for $5 per angler for the derby. This tournament, that organizers have said will become an annual event, drew more anglers than any other known crappie tournament here since the lake was impounded in 1969. The tournament featured hourly weigh-ins paying the top three anglers for the largest crappie brought in each hour. These hourly weigh-ins paying $100 for 1st place were won by Wilda Brown (9AM - 1.36 lb), Phillip Sims (10AM - 2.12 lb), Ronnie McKenzie (11AM - 1.83 lb), Kent Wiggins (12PM - 1.64 lb), Sandra Hutchinson (1PM - 1.69 lb), and Jeff Smedley (2pm - 1.75 lb). Thomasville, Alabama's Tracy Jackson fired up the crowd that had gathered for the final weigh-in when she brought in a big crappie just before 3pm. Emcee and weighmaster, James "Big Daddy" Lawler, quickly weighed the fish and announced that Jackson's 2.30 pound fish was the new leader. Her fish, worth $1000 when the three o'clock hour arrived, overtook Camden's Phillip Sims's 2.12 pound fish that led since 10am. Ronnie McKenzie of Pennington placed 3rd with a 1.83 pound crappie. Sims took home $500 and McKenzie $250. A total of $2800 was awarded to the hourly and overall winners. Five $100 tagged crappie were caught on Saturday, including two by angler Dennis Willett, a tournament competitor. One of these fish garnered Willett another $50 with a second place finish in one of the hourly weigh-ins. With only 185 tagged fish scattered across 25 miles of river and its coves, Willett's accomplishment in beating incredible odds continues to amaze the area fishermen. Heath and Jessica Crocker, of Thomaston, fishing from the same boat each pulled a tagged crappie from the same treetop to earn the couple a $100 bill each. Paul Helton of Silver Hill caught the fifth $100 tag fish on Saturday. Wilcox Area Chamber of Commerce President William Malone thanked the fishermen, many whom live outside the county, for spending their leisure time and dollars in the county. He also thanked the many sponsors that made the tournament and derby possible. Malone said, "We have already seen these efforts pay big dividends in area tourism. The enthusiasm of area businesses and fishermen has been incredible." Though the tournament itself is now in the record books, the 30-day Derby continues until May 18th. On Sunday, two more $100 fish were caught. Karen Smith of Ellisville, Mississippi caught a tagged crappie fishing from a dock at Paradise Point in Gees Bend Sunday morning. Lisa Hutcherson, of Thomasville, caught the seventh $100 fish Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on sale for $5 per angler for the derby.
